ASTM D642 Testing
The Applied Technical Services Family of Companies (FoC) evaluates the compressive resistance of packaging containers and their components in compliance with ASTM D642 testing standards. Packaging containers must endure compressive forces during storage and distribution, and our services help ensure that the containers have the compressive resistance needed to protect the container’s contents.
What is ASTM D642?
The ASTM D642 standard establishes a standardized method for evaluating the compressive strength of shipping containers, such as drums, boxes, and their components. The test measures a container’s ability to withstand external crushing forces. The ASTM D642 testing procedure is effective for containers with or without goods inside. During the test, technicians apply a compressive load at a constant rate to the container until the predetermined load is reached or the product fails. The data gathered from ASTM D642 helps manufacturers compare how different container designs and materials perform under different conditions.
Our ASTM D642 Testing Services
During the testing procedure, our technicians center the specimen on the compression test machine before the machine’s two plates press against the sample. The technicians apply compressive loads at a pre-established interval until the product fails or the specified load is met. Following the conclusion of the testing process, our clients make informed decisions on the following:
- Material selection
- Package development and design
- Quality control processes
Why is It Important to Evaluate the Compressive Strength of Packaging Materials?
The evaluation of a material’s compressive strength is essential when ensuring the compressive strength of packaging materials. Compressive strength is critical to the integrity and functionality of packaged goods and without adequate packaging, goods may be damaged in the storage and transportation process. Compressive strength tests reveal potential weaknesses in packaging structures that could result in the following:
- Crushing
- Damage
- Deformation
- Exposure to the elements
