Our Forensic Lab Testing Services
ATS’ forensic lab testing determines the source of a mechanical, structural, or equipment failure. Our cutting-edge engineering and forensic labs use powerful equipment to uncover facts about a failure or accident. ATS’s licensed professional engineers (P. E.) can perform inspections and forensic testing on-site and in one of our accredited labs.
Product Liability
Product liability evaluations determine the party responsible for a loss. Usually, the loss occurs due to a defect or error during design, manufacture, or operation. We can perform product liability evaluations in one of our labs or on-site.
Failure Analysis and Metallurgical Testing
During failure analysis, we inspect a component or system for cause and liability. If the failure occurs in metal, our metallurgical analysis identifies the cause of failure or malfunction. Failures may arise from defective design, material, or manufacture. Damage can also occur due to improper installation, poor maintenance, corrosion, or chemical contamination.
We frequently provide the following services for failure analysis and metallurgical testing:
- Chemical analysis
- Energy dispersive spectroscopy
- Hardness testing
- Mechanical testing
- Optical fractography
- Scanning electron microscopy
- X-Ray powder diffraction (XRD)
Materials Testing
In metallurgical and materials testing, we use a combination of X-ray, light microscope, and scanning electron microscope (SEM) equipment.
Our materials testing capabilities include:
- Hardness testing
- Load testing
- Pressure testing
- Strain gauge testing and measurements
- Weld testing
- Special testing
For special testing, we customize our procedures for wear, fatigue, pressure, and load testing.
Accident Reconstruction
Following a vehicle accident, our engineers can use powerful technology for accident reconstruction. Our FARO 3D Laser Scanner preserves the accident scene for inspection. Our VBOX Video H2 and HVE 2D and 3D Accident Reconstruction Software evaluate the specifics of the crash. To investigate slip, trip, and fall incidents, we use the English XL VIT articulated strut device.
Additional Services
Our forensic services extend beyond the lab. ATS can also provide the following services:
We also offer several forms of on-site testing. The engineer who inspects your property can detect moisture with an infrared camera and EIFS moisture meter. For hard-to-reach places, we can conduct inspections using the X-bot inspection robot or roof scanner. When studying an electrical failure, our engineers may use a megohmmeter to measure the electrical resistance of insulating materials.
About the ATS Family
ATS is a consulting engineering firm based in Atlanta. Since our founding in 1967, we have striven to create a reputation for high-quality research and analysis from our experts. Our core services are consulting engineering, calibration, inspection, and testing. As we expand our Family of Companies, we gain more opportunities to serve clients in a variety of industries nationwide.
We are ISO/IEC 17025:2017 accredited to perform nondestructive, calibration, chemical, mechanical, and electrical testing. Additionally, our Marietta NDT lab is NADCAP accredited. The engineers who perform forensic lab tests typically hold four-year degrees and engineering licenses. They have gained hands-on experience with other professionals. Finally, we encourage our professional engineers to expand their expertise through training opportunities.
