The Applied Technical Services Family of Services (FoC) provides API RP 583 inspection services to identify and assess early signs of corrosion damage. Specifically, API Recommended Practice 583 offers industry guidance for managing Corrosion Under Insulation (CUI) and Fireproofing (CUF) on equipment. It outlines methods for detecting, evaluating, and preventing corrosion, often caused by rust that may not be immediately visible on industrial assets.

Turning Inspection Data into Confident Asset Decisions

Since corrosion often remains undetected until significant damage occurs, API RP 583 provides a risk-based inspection and mitigation approach to protect vulnerable assets.

At ATS, our inspectors are committed to finding potential corrosion issues the first time around. We gather data to support fitness-for-service decisions, helping owners and operators make fast, safe, and cost-effective plans of action for their assets.

API RP 583 enables our inspectors to identify critical risk areas, determine equipment susceptible to CUI, and prioritize mitigation efforts. Outdoor equipment exposed to harsh weather, extreme environmental conditions, fluctuating temperatures, or insulation systems vulnerable to moisture absorption is considered high risk.

What types of equipment require API RP 583 inspection?

API RP 583 inspections are used on insulated or fireproofed equipment, such as:

  • Piping systems
  • Pressure vessels
  • Tanks
  • Heat exchangers
  • Structural components

Corrosion Detection Methods for Industrial Assets

Early detection of corrosion helps prevent leaks, ruptures, environmental and safety incidents and reduces unplanned downtime. Our experts use specialized equipment and advanced NDT methods to detect corrosion without removing insulation or dismantling critical components. Our non-destructive methods include, but are not limited to:

  • Visual inspection
  • Radiography (RT)
  • Ultrasonic Testing (UT)
  • Infrared Thermography
