The Applied Technical Services Family of Companies (FoC) conducts pulsed eddy current inspections to evaluate the thickness and condition of ferromagnetic materials.
What is a Pulsed Eddy Current Inspection?
A pulsed eddy current inspection, or PEC, is a nondestructive testing method that uses electromagnetic induction to measure the wall thickness of iron-based metals. Also used to detect corrosion, PEC inspections differ from conventional eddy current tests because conventional tests require direct contact with a bare surface. In contrast, PEC inspections can be conducted on materials with non-conductive layers such as insulation or paint.
During PEC inspections, technicians use a PEC probe to emit a brief and controlled pulse of electromagnetic energy that penetrates the material. The pulse creates eddy currents within the material, and technicians use the probe to measure the time it takes for the currents to decay, and an algorithm determines the material’s average thickness. Eddy currents require more time to decay in thicker walls than they do in thin walls, so a shorter decay time signifies thinner walls.
About Our Pulsed Eddy Current Inspection Services
Our accredited and cutting-edge NDT lab offers pulsed eddy current inspections that benefit various industries, including aerospace, power generation, and the oil and gas sector. Our inspections are precise, reliable, and rapid because they don’t require surface preparation. We can also inspect a wide array of materials while they’re in service, circumventing the need to delay operations while the inspection process takes place. Our PEC inspections are an effective way to inspect the following, including:
- Pressure vessels
- Pipelines
- Thin walls
- Steel support legs
- Storage tanks
We specialize in inspecting corrosion under insulation (CUI) and flow accelerated corrosion (FAC). We perform services with our PEC LYFT unit, which offers instant readings and detailed reports of our findings.
