ATS Recognizes the International Day of Women and Girls in Science

The International Day of Women and Girls in Science, February 11th, 2023
This Saturday, the International Day of Women and Girls in Science will be celebrated globally! This is an opportunity for the world to honor the countless women throughout history who have contributed their curiosity and careers to science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). Dr. Rosalind Franklin is an excellent example of a woman whose brilliance in science inspired future generations of women and girls to pursue their passions. Dr. Franklin’s data and photo of DNA fibers were crucial in the discovery of DNA’s structure and impact on genetics.

History of The International Day of Women & Girls in Science
Founded in 2015, the International Day of Women & Girls in Science recognizes the contributions and discoveries made by women in science and technology throughout world history. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and UN-Women use the holiday to emphasize and encourage the participation of women and girls in science as gender equality becomes a global priority.
A UNESCO Institute for Statistics study found that women account for less than 30 percent of scientific researchers despite being approximately 50 percent of the global population. The UN’s initiative promotes the presence of women in STEM careers by acknowledging the actions and achievements of women, present and past, to inspire future generations of women and girls.
