The Applied Technical Services Family of Companies (FoC) evaluates General Motor’s automotive materials in compliance with the GMW 3205 testing standard. General Motors is one of the premier automotive manufacturers around the world and to sustain their success they have quality standards their products must comply with. Our automotive testing lab assists GM as they seek to ensure that the materials used in their automotive interior meet their odor-related requirements.
What is GMW 3205?
General Motors developed GMW 3205 as a test method that effectively evaluates the odor produced by the materials used in automotive materials when they’re exposed to high humidity and high temperatures. During the test method, a technician places sample specimens in sealed containers subjecting them to high humidity and heat. This gives the technician the ability to determine the source and concentration of the unwanted odor.

Why is Automotive Odor Testing Important?
Automotive odor testing is beneficial to both manufacturers and consumers. Manufacturers are responsible for ensuring that their customers feel both safe and comfortable when occupying and using their vehicles. Aroma is such an essential paramount part of a person’s experience in a vehicle, so it’s important to diligently test automotive fabrics and materials for harsh odors. Consumers favor automakers that keep their best interest in mind, so drivers and riders will likely reward manufacturers who focus on consumer comfortability with consumer loyalty and positive brand perception. Failure to conduct odor tests on a vehicle may result in the following:
- Consumer dissatisfaction and discomfort
- Noncompliance with industry standards
- Fines and sanctions
