The Applied Technical Family of Companies (FoC) performs thermal runaway testing services that evaluate how lithium-ion batteries respond to extreme thermal conditions. Lithium-ion batteries are a popular power source for manufacturers because they store significant amounts of energy while undergoing minimal degradation. However, lithium-ion batteries can experience malfunctions and pose serious risks, so industry standards and regulations require that manufacturers evaluate how their batteries respond to thermal runaway.

What is Thermal Runaway?

Thermal runaway occurs when a batteryโ€™s internal temperature increases uncontrollably, resulting in a series of chemical reactions that generate more heat. The process is difficult to combat and the most serious examples of thermal runaway result in the release of harmful chemicals, fires, and explosions. Several conditions can lead to thermal runaway in a battery, including, but not limited to the following:

  • Charging a battery past its safe max voltage
  • Overexposure to high ambient temperatures
  • Physical damage to the battery, such as punctures and dents
  • Manufacturing errors

Our Thermal Runaway Testing

Our highly trained and experienced battery testing experts evaluate energy storage systems in alignment with our clientsโ€™ specifications and common industry standards, such as UL 9540. Our thermal runaway tests consist of thermal management tests, electrical tests, and mechanical tests. Our services promote product safety which helps protect consumers and our clientsโ€™ reputations.

Why is Thermal Runaway Testing Important?

Thermal runaway testing is essential for maintaining the safe operation of lithium-ion batteries. By subjecting energy storage systems to controlled stress, manufacturers, engineers, and experts gain a detailed understanding of how the device may respond to chemical reactions triggered by mechanical damage, overheating, and overcharging. The data gathered during the testing process is critical in maintaining the performance value, reliability, and safety of lithium-ion batteries used in renewable energy storage systems, electric vehicles, and consumer electronics.
