The Applied Technical Services Family of Companies (ATS FoC) conducts ISO 7176-16 flammability testing on postural support devices intended for wheelchair assemblies to enhance customer and patient safety.
Why is ISO 7176-16 Important to Wheelchair Safety?
ISO 7176-16 flammability testing helps ensure wheelchair assemblies are ignition resistant. Support devices help protect soft tissues, and flammability testing further reduces the risk of additional tissue damage if the support device is exposed to flame.
The method can also help facilitate design improvements and material selection by analyzing their performance against an established standard.
What is the Scope of ISO 7176-16?
ISO 7176-16 applies to support devices, such as sling backs or sling seats, that accommodate non-integrated postural support devices like cushions. The standard permits separate testing each component separately according to its orientation and intended use, for example, testing arm supports in a horizontal position and thoracic harnesses in a vertical position.
This standard does not include the metallic components or the completed wheelchair’s flammability.
Flammability Testing: When You Need to Be Sure
Flammability testing improves safety and limits fire spread. Working with an accredited testing lab ensures traceable and accurate results. In addition to ISO 7176-16, we offer testing to other flammability standards, including:
- NFPA 260
- NFPA 261
- NFPA 266
- ASTM E1537
- California Technical Bulletin 117:2013
- CA TB 133
