Applied Technical Services provides Acceleration Testing to help clients verify that their device or materiel can withstand steady-state inertia loads.
What is MIL-STD-810 Method 513?
MIL-STD-810 Acceleration Testing is a procedure that evaluates the structural integrity and viability of devices and materials during and after high g-loads. Manufacturers may request this test for materials installed in helicopters, aircraft, aerospace vehicles, and ground/sea launched missiles.
Method 513 encompasses a wide variety of materials in its tests. The testing conditions vary depending on the materiel under test to more closely replicate their intended service environment. The standard requires technicians to tailor the test to each specific materiel being tested.
How does MIL-STD-810 Acceleration Testing Work?
While the test varies depending on the materiel under test, the procedures remain largely the same. Section 2 of the Military Standard 810 provides formulas for determining g-loads for fighter aircraft due to the high roll and pitch rates as well as tables of recommended g-loads for helicopters, aerospace vehicles, and ground/sea launched missiles. The procedures of the test are as follows:
- Procedure 1 โ Structural Test โ The device or materiel is subjected to a specified g-level while not in operation
- Procedure 2 โ Operational Test โ The device or materiel is subjected to a specified g-level while in operation
- Procedure 3 โ Crash Hazard Acceleration Test โ The device or materiel is subjected to very high non-operational g-loads to ensure they do not become a hazard in the event of a crash
Once testing is complete, ATS experts will evaluate the device to assess several properties such as visual damage, electrical and heating performance, and overall device performance to standards.
