The Applied Technical Services Family of Companies’ (ATS FoC’s) MIL‑STD‑810 Method 504 testing services help manufacturers ensure their equipment can withstand exposure to operational fluids encountered in real‑world applications.

What is MIL‑STD‑810 Method 504?

MIL‑STD‑810 Method 504 is the U.S. Department of Defense’s standardized procedure for assessing how materials, components, and equipment respond to contamination by fluids commonly used in military and aerospace applications. These fluids include lubricants, cleaning agents, hydraulic oils, coolants, and de‑icing compounds. In the event of prolonged exposure or contamination, these fluids can cause the following;

  • Coating degradation
  • Adhesion failure
  • Corrosion
  • Electrical issues

Method 504 determines whether equipment maintains its integrity and functionality after direct or indirect contact with these substances. The method helps identify various vulnerabilities present in a product. The standard includes the following procedures designed to replicate realistic exposure scenarios:

Occasional Exposure

Testing experts expose an item to chemicals for 5 to 10 minutes before bringing it to ambient temperature.

Intermittent Exposure

Testing experts expose an item to chemicals for 8 continuous hours, then allow it to air-dry under standard ambient conditions for 16 hours.

Extended Contamination

Testing experts expose an item to chemicals for 24 hours, uninterrupted, unless otherwise specified.

About Our MIL‑STD‑810 Method 504 Testing Services

Our laboratory utilizes advanced environmental chambers and controlled‑exposure systems to deliver comprehensive Method 504 testing. We perform evaluations in accordance with the standard’s defined procedures, ensuring accurate and repeatable results. Our capabilities include:

  • Accidental fluid contamination testing
  • Maintenance‑related fluid exposure
  • Long‑duration immersion studies
  • Post‑exposure functional and structural assessments

These services help clients verify material compatibility, validate protective coatings, and ensure equipment durability when exposed to operational fluids. We support manufacturers across the defense, aerospace,  automotive, electronics, and industrial sectors by developing mission‑critical components, enclosures, and assemblies.
