Radiation Hardness Testing

Radiation-Hardened Electronics
Radiation-hardened electronics, also known as rad-hard electronics, are electronic components made less susceptible to damage caused by radiation exposure. They perform the same functions as their non-hardened counterparts but are less prone to these adverse effects, making them more optimal for aerospace applications.
The Importance of Radiation Hardness Testing
Most electronic components and circuits are susceptible to damage from radiation, which poses a risk to aerospace operations. To ensure the proper functionality of these devices, electronic components and circuits must undergo radiation hardness testing. The process of radiation hardness testing uses non-hardened electronics to test design variations, which reduces susceptibility to damage.
How Radiation Hardness Testing Works
Electronics must go through rigorous stages of development and testing to reach radiation hardness. Manufacturers will need to test their products against various resultant effects through processes including total ionizing dose (TID) effect, damage dose displacement (DDD) effect, single event effect (SEE), and enhanced low dose rate sensitivity (ELDRS).
Types of Radiation Effects
- TID effects appear as parametric degradation, which leads to functional failure.
- DDD effects result from the exposure of electronic devices to particle fluences.
- SEE effects occur when heavy protons or ions pass through semiconductor materials to deposit energy.
- ELDRS effects occur in an irradiation field with a low dose rate, degrading electronic devices in space.
