RLAT Testing

The Applied Technical Services (ATS) Family of Companies performs RLAT testing at our state-of-the-art radiation lab.
Space Radiation
Space radiation can negatively impact electrical equipment and system reliability. The effects of radiation can either occur over time or in an instant, leading to malfunction or complete failure of electronic devices.
Some space systems should be able to endure these effects, but their equipment will eventually lose functionality and break from the cumulative, long-term ionizing damage.
Total Ionizing Dose Effects
Total ionizing dose (TID) effects can cause drastic degradation and functional failure in electrical equipment. An array of testing methods can combat the risks posed by radiation before manufacturers send their devices out into space.
Single Engery Effects
Single Energy Effects (SEEs) occur when heavy ions or protons pass through semiconductor components in order to deposit energy. They can be destructive or non-destructive, posing a risk to space missions when they cause high-energy electrical disturbances in the normal operation of a circuit.
What RLAT Testing Is
Radiation Lot Acceptance Testing (RLAT testing) is a testing process that inspects semiconductor lots for an array of radiation effects. RLAT testing occurs before and after the semiconductor components are exposed to radiation. During the testing process, each parameter has average and standard deviation criteria that determine the irradiated parts’ success or failure.
How RLAT Testing Works
Radiation specialists will conduct functional tests and take parametric measurements throughout the testing process. All parameters under testing should stay within the set spec speed limits. Specialists calculate and compare the results to the part limits using the average and standard deviation values, as well as a one-sided tolerance factor. They will then document their findings and report them back to the manufacturers.
Quality Standards and Protocols
The ATS Family of Companies adheres to specific quality guidelines and protocols to ensure our radiation testing lab meets the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) testing guidelines, methods, and standards. We guarantee our radiation lab services meet relevant requirements, such as reliability, safety, common measurement standards, and logistical system alignments. When working with the ATS Family of Companies, clients can be confident that their compliance and quality standards take priority.
