The Applied Technical Services Family of Companies performs high potential testing, also known as Hipot Testing, to help avoid electric shock, fire, and other potential motor hazards.

High Potential Testing

Hipot Testing is a term commonly used to refer to Dielectric Withstand Testing, a test that applies high voltage to machinery, equipment, and devices to analyze electrical insulation. Hipot testing motors helps to prevent various hazards that can result in serious harm to individuals as well as damage to connected and nearby equipment. The testing procedure for Hipot testing motors typically consists of the following steps:

Test Preparation: the motor is completely disconnected from all accessories and power sources and a solid ground is verified. All specialized tools and equipment, such as power supplies, dielectric withstand testers, and any other testing devices are prepared. Testing parameters are established to determine the optimal test voltage, typically aligning with regulatory standards, safety regulations, motor specifications, and/or client-specified parameters.

Voltage Induction: high voltage is applied to the motor’s insulation system for a predetermined duration. Any potential voltage leaks are identified at this step in the process and data is compiled.

Data Analysis: Our highly skilled Hipot testing experts thoroughly analyze all data from the test to determine the condition and effectiveness of the motor’s insulation.

Documentation: All ATS testing procedures consist of thorough, in-depth reporting covering every aspect of preparation, testing, final findings, and recommended action.
