Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR) material analysis is used to identify polymeric and organic materials. FT-IR analysis utilizes infrared radiation (IR) to scan and observe unknown materials. Our chemists use this technology to determine the identities of unknown sample materials by cross-referencing a spectral database containing thousands of different organic compounds and polymers.
How Does FT-IR Material Analysis Work?
FT-IR passes IR radiation through a thin sample. Polymeric and organic materials are composed of functional groups that absorb IR radiation at specific wavelengths of energy.
This absorption (and transmission) of energy produces a spectral molecular fingerprint. Each organic material has a unique spectral fingerprint which makes FT-IR useful for determining various unknown materials and confirming known materials in consumer products, foods, polymers, paints, and pharmaceuticals, to name a few. Given the unknown sampleโs IR spectrum, we can then compare it to thousands of existing spectra in infrared radiation (IR) libraries and easily determine the sampleโs identity.
Applications of FT-IR Analysis
ATS chemists utilize FT-IR for a variety of other applications such as:
- Product Failure Analysis
- Contamination Analysis
- Quantitative and Qualitative Scans
- Research and Development
- Purity Assessment
- Material Analysis and Identification
- Material Testing
ATSโ FT-IR Material Analysis Services
The ATS chemical analysis lab is equipped with a Nicolet 380 FT-IR which houses a low-pressure diamond anvil cell that can handle liquid and solid samples as small as half a millimeter in their natural state. At ATS, FT-IR analysis is virtually non-destructive in most cases.
ATS boasts a team of capable scientists working on various FT-IR analysis projects regularly. At ATS, we strive to provide unparalleled customer service by providing FT-IR analysis at a competitive price. We are dedicated to quality assurance by maintaining multiple accreditations, registrations, and certifications including ISO/IEC 17025:2017, 10 CFR 50 – Appendix B, and ISO 9001:2015.
