Melting Point Analysis
Applied Technical Services conducts melting point analysis in our state-of-the-art chemical analysis laboratories.
What is Melting Point Analysis?
Performing melting point analysis services characterizes the melting point of a sample in an effective and efficient manner. Melting point analysis, also referred to as MP analysis, may also be used to quantitatively determine a test subject’s purity and to identify pure samples within a test subject. Through the use of different types of equipment based on the sample’s material or materials, melting point analysis heats a sample to monitor its ability to withstand specific temperatures and identify the temperature at which melting begins to occur. This equipment varies in design, though all consist of a thermometer, a heating element, and visual inspection devices. A sample must be at least 90% pure, containing less than 10% impurities, and is dried and inserted into a glass tube. This tube is then loaded into the melting point analysis machine, heated, and analyzed. Data from this analysis is documented and provided to the client along with an explanation of the information. Melting point analysis requires solid samples and cannot determine purity if more than one solute is present.
Differential Scanning Calorimetry Testing
Differential scanning calorimetry testing, commonly referred to as DSC testing, is another method of determining a sample’s melting point performed by Applied Technical Services’ chemical analysis department. DSC is a comprehensive testing method that has many applications due to its versatility. DSC testing monitors different aspects of a sample, including its melting point, temperature phase changes, and heat capacity.
Melting Point Analysis Common Applications
Due to the fact that this analysis method only requires a small sample to perform and is quick, cost effective, and highly accurate for mostly pure samples, melting point analyses have many common applications across a variety of industries and disciplines. Some of these applications include:
- Sample Purity Identification
- Sample Material Identification
- Sample Thermal Stability Identification
- Research and Development
- Crystalline Subject Identification
- Physical and Chemical Properties Identification
