1-4 Dioxane Testing and Analysis

What is 1,4-Dioxane?
1,4-Dioxane is a synthetic chemical commonly used in degreasing solvents. The chemical is not a direct ingredient in consumer products but a byproduct of several popular ingredients, including Polyethylene, Polyoxyethylene, PEG, and oxynol. Various household products contain 1,4-dioxane, including:

1,4-Dioxane Restrictions
New York State’s new policy restricts the use of 1,4 dioxane in household products sold or distributed within the state. The ban’s restrictions phasedown, giving manufacturers time to gradually reduce their use of 1,4 dioxane before the chemical is completely banned. The restrictions include limiting the presence of 1,4 dioxane in household and personal care to 2ppm by 12/31/2022 and 1ppm by 12/31/2023. Cosmetic products will be limited to 10ppm as of 12/31/2022.
California lists 1,4-dioxane as a carcinogen under California’s Proposition 65 law, but the synthetic chemical will likely be the subject of further restrictions. In recent years California has proposed plans to minimize the presence of 1,4-dioxane in consumer products as several state, and federal agencies continue investigating the controversial chemical.
