The Applied Technical Services Family of Companies (FoC) performs NMC battery testing services that evaluate the safety and performance characteristics of NMC batteries.
What are NMC batteries?
Nickel Manganese Cobalt (NMC) is a type of lithium-ion battery commonly used in electric vehicles, stationary energy storage systems, and portable electronics. NMC batteries have a high energy density, enabling them to store significant amounts of energy in a compact and lightweight package. They also often have a longer cycle life than other lithium-ion batteries, as well as improved resistance to thermal runaway and similar hazards. NMC batteries arenโt without their disadvantages. Cobalt is in high demand, but in limited supply; it can be an expensive element to acquire, so NMC batteries are often more expensive than other lithium-ion alternatives. The batteries themselves also have limited fast charging capabilities, and they require costly thermal management solutions to reduce the likelihood of thermal runaway and overheating.
Why is It Important to Test NMC Batteries?
As battery technology improves and evolves into a more efficient and cost-effective option, consumers and manufacturers are turning their attention to different types of batteries. In the last decade or so, the demand for NMC battery testing has increased as brands like Nissan and BMW use NMC batteries for their EVs. Independent battery testing labs, such as ours, have the ability and personnel needed to support clients as they ensure that their NMC batteries are fit for their intended purpose. Our team of experts provides services that help our clients do the following:
- Ensure battery safety
- Evaluate the batteryโs performance and efficiency
- Determine cycle life
- Maintain quality control
- Comply with laws and regulations, including UN 38.3
