The Applied Technical Services Family of Companies’ (FoC’s) thermal propagation testing capabilities enable us to evaluate how batteries respond to rapid temperature increases. Lithium-ion batteries are the primary choice for electric vehicle manufacturers due to their longevity, energy efficiency, and extended range. However, like all batteries, lithium-ion batteries have their risks and challenges, and thermal propagation is among the biggest concerns for battery manufacturers. Our battery testing laboratory’s thermal propagation can help your business ensure the safety of its lithium-ion batteries by testing them in accordance with UL 9540A.
What is Thermal Propagation?
Thermal propagation occurs when a temperature increase in one battery cell expands to other cells, leading to a rapid and uncontrolled increase in heat throughout the battery. Thermal propagation can be caused by the following:
- Manufacturing defects, including low-quality cells, defective separators, and metallic contaminants
- Mechanical abuse, such as crushing, dropping, and puncturing
- Electrical abuse, such as overcharging, over-discharging, and short circuits
Thermal propagation can cause overheating, which can ultimately result in melting, explosions, and fires.
What is Thermal Propagation Testing?
Thermal propagation tests evaluate a battery system’s ability to resist the events of thermal runaway and thermal propagation. During the testing procedure, technicians increase the battery’s temperature by subjecting it to needle penetration, flames, or heating elements. Temperature sensors monitor the battery’s thermal propagation, while voltage monitors allow technicians to observe fluctuations in the voltage of cells. Gas analyzers provide information about the flammability and toxicity of the gas created by the thermal propagation.
