The Applied Technical Services Family of Companies (FoC) is an accredited provider of MIL-STD-810 Method 500 testing services.

What is MIL-STD 810 Method 500?

MIL‑STD‑810 Method 500 is the U.S. Department of Defense’s (DOD’s) standardized laboratory procedure for evaluating equipment performance under low‑pressure, high‑altitude conditions. As part of the larger MIL‑STD‑810 environmental testing standard, Method 500 replicates the reduced atmospheric pressure experienced during high-altitude operations, storage, and transportation. MIL-STD-810 method 500 determines whether a product or material can maintain functionality in low-pressure environments or withstand sudden pressure changes. The test method consists of the following four procedures:

Storage at Altitude (Procedure I)

Procedure I determines if stored equipment can endure prolonged exposure to low atmospheric pressure. It simulates conditions seen in unpressurized cargo bays and high-elevation depots. Its primary purpose is to observe various signs of equipment failure, such as leakage, seal failure, and deformation.

Operation at Altitude (Procedure II)

Procedure II determines if equipment can operate properly at high altitudes. It evaluates equipment for signs of electrical instability, performance issues, electric instability, and mechanical problems.

Rapid Decompression (Procedure III)

Procedure III simulates depressurization events and analyzes how equipment responds to a sudden loss of cabin pressure. The procedure determines if rapid decompression causes equipment to malfunction, leak, or rupture.

Explosive Decompression (Procedure IV)

Procedure IV determines whether equipment can withstand explosive decompression without creating hazardous conditions for personnel or the aircraft.

About Our MIL-STD 810 Method 500 Testing Services

Our laboratory uses advanced environmental chambers to provide comprehensive MIL‑STD‑810 Method 500 testing services. We offer low-altitude testing services in accordance with the procedures outlined in the standard:

  • Storage at altitude
  • Operational at altitude
  • Rapid decompression
  • Explosive decompression

Our services ensure our clients’ equipment complies with the method’s technical requirements. We help manufacturers verify their equipment designs, validate sealing, and evaluate enclosure performance. Our services support clients developing aerospace components, aircraft electronics, sealed enclosures, and mission‑critical field equipment.
