Electrical conductivity testing
Conductivity in Metals
Most metals have electrical resistance, which is affected by their purity. If electrical resistance is higher or lower than expected, it can cause equipment damage, poor product performance, or hazardous conditions that result in injury. Measuring electrical resistivity or conductivity with a handheld multimeter seems straightforward, but this method proves less accurate when the values are very high or low. While a handheld multimeter is useful for testing circuit continuity, other techniques are more accurate and more reliable for reading conductivity.
ASTM B193 Testing
The ASTM B193 standard tests metallic electrical conductor materials for conductivity and resistivity. The test is recommended on samples with a resistance of 0.00001 ohms (or 10 microohms) and above. Temperature affects a metal’s electrical resistance, a consideration for which ASTM B193 accounts. Inaccuracies in the conductor’s assumed density may affect the accuracy of weight resistivity values, however.
