AC Hipot Testing
The Applied Technical Services Family of Companies (FoC) offers professional AC hipot testing services that evaluate the quality and safety of electrical insulation systems.
What is AC Hipot Testing?
Dielectric withstand testing, also referred to as hipot testing, is a stress test that evaluates insulation’s ability to withstand high voltage. Hipot tests can either be conducted using AC or DC high voltage, each choice offering its own advantages and disadvantages. During an AC hipot test, technicians apply a significant AC voltage to the test conductor and measure the current leakage. AC hipot tests offer multiple advantages over DC hipot tests, including:
- AC is more commonly used so it’s a more accurate reflection of real-world conditions
- It requires a lower test voltage which reduces the likelihood of damage during testing
- AC requires less power which often leads to more efficient testing and lower expenses
- The testing process is simpler and quicker than DC testing
Our AC Hipot Testing Services
Our technical experts use their decades of shared experience in electrical testing to conduct comprehensive evaluations of our clients’ electronic products and equipment. We pride ourselves on our ability to meet the specific needs of our clients, so our technicians keep an open line of communication throughout the service process, ensuring transparency and satisfaction.
The Importance of Hipot Testing
Hipot testing is incredibly important as it determines a device’s level of electrical insulation. Hipot tests are needed to confirm that insulation can endure overvoltage without experiencing failure. Various types of devices such as bus bars, cables, generators, relays, and transformers benefit from hitpot testing. Overall, hipot tests are highly effective at finding the following defects:
- Crushed or damaged insultation
- Stray wires that can cause
- Corrosive elements that degrade insulation
- Spacing issues that cause current leakage
Failure to conduct thorough evaluations of insulation could result in potential issues that compromise electronic devices by causing malfunctions, safety concerns, and issues that reduce the product’s lifespan.
