Applied Technical Services performs FTIR Surface Analysis in our chemical analysis laboratories. FTIR Spectroscopy is frequently used in several different industries, including manufacturing, petrochemical, medical, pharmaceutical, and food and beverage.

FTIR Spectroscopy

FTIR Spectroscopy, also known as Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy or FTIR Analysis, is a highly efficient analysis method used to detect and identify different types of materials, including organic, inorganic, and polymeric materials. FTIR Surface Analysis utilizes infrared light to scan test samples and analyze their chemical properties, sending infrared radiation through a sample to monitor absorption levels. The radiation absorbed by the sample material is converted into energy that results in a signal, creating a unique spectral print that allows for chemical identification.

Common FTIR Surface Analysis Applications

FTIR Spectroscopy is commonly used to analyze manufactured materials and is typically the first method of analysis in material identification following a visual inspection. FTIR Surface Analysis is particularly effective when identifying smaller particles on a materialโ€™s surface. Some common applications of this analysis method include:

  • Material Identification and Characterization
  • Contamination Identification
  • Additive Detection and Identification
  • Failure Analysis

In addition to FTIR Spectroscopy, Applied Technical Servicesโ€™ certified chemists perform several types of relevant services in our fully accredited chemical analysis labs, such as:

  • Optical Emission Spectroscopy (OES)
  • Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP MS)
  • High Pressure Liquid Chromatography (HPLC)
  • Liquid Chromatography / Mass Spectrometry (LC/MS)
  • Gas Chromatography / Mass Spectrometry (GC/MS)
  • Static Headspace Gas Chromatography
  • Dynamic Headspace Gas Chromatography
  • Methane Analysis Gas Chromatography
