ATS provides PAH testing for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons from our chemical analysis labs. PAHs are fused aromatic rings starting with naphthalene C10H8, which increase in molecular weight. PAH compounds may also be made up, including five-membered rings, such as in Benzo(j)fluoranthene.
Current Regulations on PAHs
PAHs are usually the byproducts of incomplete combustion of organic matter and the processing of fossil fuels such as coal and oil. Because many of these compounds are known carcinogens, industry standards and government regulations heavily curb their use in consumer products.
To keep our manufacturing clients compliant with federal, state, and international regulations, ATS performs PAH testing on sample materials. PAH limits and restrictions are currently regulated by:
- EPA
- EU REACH
- ZEK-01-08
PAH Testing and Chromatography
Clients frequently request PAH testing according to EPA Method 8270D and EPA Method 3545A. Both methods require sensitive chromatograph equipment. ATS utilizes Gas Chromatography / Mass Spectrometry (GC/MS) and Liquid Chromatography / Mass Spectroscopy (LC/MS/MS) with a current detection limit of 100 parts per billion (ppb) for PAH testing.
Using these methods, our experts can detect compounds in this restricted class, including:
- Fluorene
- Fluoranthene
- Benz(a)anthracene
- Benzopyrene
- Acenaphthene
- Naphthalene
