Applied Technical Services offers European toy safety testing for clients looking to ensure that toys are manufactured in compliance with EN 71. All toys sold in the EU must follow EN 71, which refers to a set of European product safety standards that exist to identify hazards and reduce toy-related accidents. Failure to comply with EN 71 can result in the withdrawal of products, lawsuits, fines, and even imprisonment.
The EN-71 standard is broken down into several parts, although the most requested tests cover parts 1-3, which are described below:
EN 71-1: Mechanical and Physical Properties of Toys
The 71-1 standard serves to determine whether a toy has certain features or characteristics that could present health hazards that are not clear to users. Examples of such hazards include sharp materials or small parts that could cause choking. Appropriate warning labels must be applied to toys if they present safety concerns based on this standard.
EN 71-2: Flammability of Toys
Standard 71-2 establishes requirements for toys that could present significant injury risk to children with their potential to catch fire. It determines the flammability of toys by analyzing certain factors, such as what materials are used in each product and how quickly they burn. Specific requirements may be established for toys that appear to be the most flammable, such as wigs, costumes, and stuffed animals.
EN 71-3: Migration of Certain Elements
EN 71-3 determines the migration of elements such as Antimony, Barium, Cadmium, Chromium, Lead, Mercury, and Selenium from toys. This applies mainly to the following toy materials: paints, varnishes, textiles, glass/ceramic materials, pencils, and pliable modeling materials, among others. EN 71 Part 3 restricts the amount of lead that may be released from certain toys, while also regulating the uses of other potentially toxic elements.
