The Applied Technical Services Family of Companies (ATS FoC) tests consumer products for compliance with the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR). The PPWR is a European Union proposal that introduces stricter requirements for packaging design, reuse, and recycling to reduce waste and promote a circular economy. It sets binding targets and extends producer responsibility, requiring manufacturers and retailers to improve recyclability, minimize material use, and limit single-use packaging.

What Testing Is Required to Demonstrate PPWR Compliance?

PPWR compliance requires accredited laboratory testing to verify material safety, environmental performance, and claims related to circularity.

Compliance testing typically covers four key areas to meet regulatory requirements:

  • Chemical and Substance Screening: Confirms compliance with heavy metal limits and restrictions on per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), especially in food-contact materials.
  • Recyclability and Material Sorting: Assesses polymer purity, automated sorting, and fiber recovery rates to meet Design for Recyclability (DfR) standards.
  • PCR Content and Migration Analysis: Verifies post-consumer recycled (PCR) material content and assesses potential chemical migration risks.
  • Compostability Testing: Determines compliance with industrial or home compostability criteria for designated biodegradable packaging formats.

About Our PPWR Testing Services

Our laboratory helps manufacturers, importers, and retailers prepare for the European Union’s Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation by providing responsive service and reliable testing solutions. We collaborate with clients to evaluate packaging materials, verify compliance, and supply data to support product development and market access. Throughout each project, we communicate clearly, provide timely updates, and tailor testing programs to your objectives and regulatory requirements. Whether you need packaging characterization, material analysis, or compliance support, our professionals are available to answer questions and recommend effective testing strategies. Partner with us to simplify PPWR compliance, reduce regulatory risk, and advance your packaging projects with confidence through our technical expertise and dedicated customer support. Our lab specializes in detecting the following:

  • Cadmium (Cd)
  • Hexavalent Chromium (Cr(VI))
  • Lead (Pb)
  • Mercury (Hg)
  • PFAS
