The Applied Technical Services Family of Companies (FoC) has a melt flow index testing lab that evaluates polymers in accordance with the ASTM D1238 testing standard. The information obtained during melt flow index testing greatly benefits manufacturers seeking to sustain or improve their quality control.

What is Melt Flow Index?

Melt Flow Index or MFI represents a polymer’s flow as it travels through a capillary at a certain pressure and temperature in a 10-minute window. A polymer’s MFI value corresponds to molecular weight, so the greater the MFI, the lower the molecular weight. A polymer’s molecular weight is a relevant factor to consider during the material selection process because it can have a significant impact on the following:

  • Tensile strength
  • Viscosity
  • Processing potential
  • Solubility
  • Melting point

More About Our Melt Flow Index Testing Lab

Our MFI testing lab carries out comprehensive services that offer important insight into the behavior of polymers. We help manufacturers ensure that their material selection process is effective, which allows them to maintain adequate levels of quality control and operational efficiency. Our MFI testing services comply with two widely accepted standards, DIN EN ISO 1133-A, Code T, and ASTM D1238. Upon completion of our tests, our clients will have data regarding the following:

  • Flow rate (600/t x weight of extrudate)
  • time of extrudate in seconds
  • melt flow rate g/10 min.

Why is MFI Testing Important?

MFI testing is a highly effective way for plastic manufacturers to evaluate the behavior of polymers. Manufacturers compare the MFI grades of different polymers to assess which polymer would perform well for specific applications. MFI testing is essential in polymer manufacturing to ensure product quality, consistency, and compliance with industry standards.
