The Applied Technical Services Family of Companies (FoC) determines the melt flow rate of polymers in accordance with the procedures outlined in ASTM D1238. Polymers and plastics are popular materials manufacturers because of their low production costs and versatility. Manufacturers must consider a polymerโs melt flow rate when selecting a material for specific tasks and conditions. Our ASTM-compliant lab is adept at testing sample materials per the techniques outlined in ASTM standards, such as ASTM D1238.
What is ASTM D1238?
The American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) created ASTM D1238 as a standardized test method for those using an extrusion plastometer to determine a polymerโs melt flow rate. During the procedure, technicians load a sample into the heated barrel of a melt flow apparatus before placing a weight on the plunger. The plunger applies pressure to the molten polymer, forcing it through a capillary die. To conclude the test, technicians measure the number of grams of the polymer that extrudes through the capillary die in 10 minutes.
Our ASTM D1238 Testing Services
Our chemical testing lab offers numerous ASTM-compliant services, including ASTM D1238 melt flow rate testing. The standard offers important information on a materialโs behavior, weight distribution, and qualifications for specific tasks and conditions. The data collected can be used to maintain quality control and improve manufacturing and product development strategies.
