Applied Technical Services offers a range of thermal analysis services to test product durability and help clients ensure compliance with industry standards. Thermal analysis can be used to test several different types of materials and is performed by ATS in our chemical analysis laboratories located throughout the United States.
Thermal Analysis
Thermal Analysis subjects a product or sample to predetermined temperatures in a controlled environment, closely monitoring physical changes that take place at specific temperatures. Different testing and analysis techniques are used based on the type of material being tested and its purpose, with many tests requiring the use of several different techniques. In general, thermal analysis services provide a precise knowledge of a subjectโs material composition and the way this composition is impacted when exposed to controlled changes in temperature.
Thermogravimetric Analysis
TGA, or thermogravimetric analysis, is a rapid, highly efficient way to verify a subjectโs thermal stability. TGA can be used to determine several different physical changes that occur when a sample is being tested, such as loss of mass and weight during thermal cycling. TGA is also able to determine a test subjectโs biochemical composition, cellulose content, and hemicellulose content. Due to its versatility, TGA is a common method of thermal testing and analysis with many applications. Applied Technical Services conducts thermogravimetric analysis to a number of different standards, including ISO 11358 and ASTM E1131. The graph below displays the properties observed in materials undergoing thermogravimetric analysis:
Common Thermal Analysis Applications
Thermal analysis has countless applications across a wide range of industries, including consumer product testing, manufacturing, pharmaceutical, construction, automotive, aerospace, medical, and military and defense. Thermal analysis is commonly conducted on several different types of materials, including but not limited to:
