The Applied Technical Services Family of Companies (FoC) tests lithium ion batteries in compliance with UL 9540A testing standards.
What is UL 9540A?
Underwriters Laboratories, or UL, designed the UL 9540A test method to evaluate the fire risks of battery energy storage systems during thermal runaway events. A thermal runaway is a chain reaction where overheating can lead to an explosion. The test method consists of the following stages:
Cell Level Test
The Cell Level Test provides information about the following:
  • Cell design
  • Cell surface temperature at gas venting and thermal runaway
  • Thermal runaway methodology

Module Level Test

The Module Level Test offers insight into the following:
  • Module design
  • External flaming
  • Flying debris hazards
  • Heat release rate

Unit Level Test

The Unit Level Test provides information about the following:

  • Deflagration
  • Fire protection
  • Gas composition and generation
  • Target wall surface and battery energy storage system temperature
