What is Dynamic Mechanical Analysis? 

Dynamic Mechanical Analysis (DMA)  is a thermal‑mechanical characterization process that measures a material’s viscoelastic response to an oscillating force. During testing, technicians apply a sinusoidal force to the specimen while controlling the material’s temperature and the frequency and duration at which the force is applied. The testing instrument’s sensors record the amount of deformation time and the phase lag between stress and strain. The procedure’s objective is to calculate several of a polymer’s viscoelastic properties, including: 

  • Storage modulus (elasticity/stiffness)
  • Loss modulus (viscosity) 
  • Damping factor (energy dissipation frequency) 
  • Glass transition temperature 

DMA provides engineers with a better understanding of how vibration, thermal cycling, and dynamic loading can affect a material’s real-world performance.
