Macro Etch Testing
Applied Technical Services performs macro etch testing as one of our many weld testing capabilities. Our team of professional engineers, certified weld inspectors, SNT-TC-1A certified technicians, chemists, and metallurgists provide a wide range of high-quality weld testing and inspection services. We offer API, ASME, AWS, MIL-STD, and NAVSEA compliant services, depending on the client’s particular needs.
The Macro Etch Test
Macro etching is a mechanical procedure that assesses weld quality. The macro etch test evaluates cross-sections of a sample, cut transversely to the weld axis. A technician grinds, polishes, and etches the cut face of the sample using a chemical reagent, distinguishing the weld area, base metal, and heat-affected zone (HAZ) for examination. This also exposes the sample’s flow lines and microstructure.
Using low magnification, inspectors can assess a sample for fusion, penetration, porosity, cracks, discontinuities, weld size, and other characteristics. The data collected from macro etching helps clients with welder qualification testing, routine quality checks, failure analysis, weld procedure qualification, and other applications.
Additional Weld Testing Services
ATS weld testing experts can offer macro etch examinations in conjunction with weld break testing. We also have a wide variety of additional mechanical testing options available, including:
- Load testing
- Tensile testing
- Bend testing
- Lap shear
- Impact testing
- Hardness testing
We also perform numerous metallurgical, nondestructive, and chemical tests for welds, such as:
- Visual testing
- Ultrasonic testing
- Traditional radiography testing
- Liquid penetrant testing
- Magnetic particle testing
- Computed digital radiography
- Ferrite testing
- Failure analysis
ATS tests pipe and plate coupons, configured components, pressure vessels, and larger structures such as bridges. Utilizing state-of-the-art technology, our experts can find solutions to all our clients’ weld testing needs.
