Macro etched weld undergoing testing

Macro Etch Weld Testing Services

Applied Technical Services offers macro etch weld testing services to help clients get a closer look at weld quality. Our certified weld inspectors, professional engineers, metallurgists, SNT-TC-1A certified technicians, and chemists perform a wide array of weld testing services, offering a high degree of experience and knowledge in each testing method. We perform weld tests according to ASME, AWS, API, MIL-STD, and NAVSEA standards according to each client’s individual needs.
Macro Etch Testing
Macro etching evaluates samples cut from weld coupons to check for weld quality. An inspector must grind and polish the cut face of the sample before etching the surface with a chemical reagent. This process makes the weld area, heat-affected zone (HAZ), and base metal more easily distinguishable and exposes the microstructure and flow lines in the material. Inspectors examine the etched surface for discontinuities, cracks, porosity, weld profile, lack of sidewall fusion, weld size, lack of penetration, and other material characteristics. The macro etch test can provide data for weld procedure qualification, failure analysis, routine quality checks, and welder qualification testing.
Our Weld Testing Expertise
ATS often performs macro etch testing alongside weld break testing. We also offer a wide array of other mechanical weld tests, such as:
We can evaluate both components and structures for weld quality, including bridges, pressure vessels, pipes, configured components, and valves. Our experts can identify flaws on and beneath the material’s surface, providing detailed reports for clients from various industries.
