The Applied Technical Services Family of Companies (FoC) offers comprehensive HRSG inspection services that evaluate the safety and efficiency of HRSGs.
What is an HRSG?
A heat recovery steam generator, or HRSG, generates steam using the heat from hot gases that would otherwise go to waste. Industrial equipment, such as gas turbines, produce a significant amount of heat, so HRSGs improve operational efficiency by recapturing waste. Heat recovery steam generators often work in conjunction with gas turbines. In these circumstances, the HRSG collects the turbine’s exhaust gases and works alongside a steam turbine to generate electricity from the exhaust gases. HRSGs are commonplace in industrial environments where additional steam may be necessary to meet the demand of ongoing projects. HRGRs are staples in the oil and gas, pulp and paper, and power generation industries, and they’re commonly found in the following types of facilities:
- Power plants
- Chemical plants
- Refineries
About Our HRSG Inspection Services
The ATS FoC’s accredited Level II and Level III NDT inspections conduct careful inspections of heat recovery steam generators. Our inspectors rely on visual, eddy current, ultrasonic, and metallurgical methodologies to inspect the following areas of HRSGs:
- Attic
- Basement
- Drums and tanks
- Exterior
- Gas Path
- Water side
Why is It Important to Inspect HRSGs?
Inspections are a core part of the ownership and operation of all forms of equipment, but especially major machinery like heat recovery steam generators. Professional inspections from accredited parties like the ATS FoC allowed equipment owners and operators to rest assured knowing their equipment has been properly analyzed and evaluated for damage and similar signs of concern. HRSGs are susceptible to many types of stressors, but the most common types of failures are as follows:
- Flow-assisted corrosion
- Under-deposit corrosion, including hydrogen damage, caustic gouging, and acid phosphate corrosion
- Pitting
- Creep
- Corrosion fatigue
In most cases, HRSGs require inspection on an annual basis, but the frequency of inspections may differ depending on the guidelines provided by insurance companies and regulatory bodies. Regardless of the frequency, our lab is eager to help ensure our clients have complete confidence in the reliability, safety, and performance of their HRSGs while also ensuring they comply with regulatory requirements.
