The Applied Technical Services Family of Companies provides sound meter calibration to ensure the accuracy of various equipment.
Sound Meters
A sound meter is an instrument utilized for acoustic measurements. The microphone’s diaphragm is responsive to certain changes in air pressure caused by sound waves, converting them into electrical signals as they move.
Sound Meter Calibrators
Sound meters and their accessories should be thoroughly inspected before any measurement, aiming attention toward any damage or accumulation of foreign materials on either the microphone’s diaphragm or protection grid. The voltage of the sound meter’s power supply should also be assessed to ensure it is within specified operating limits.
The type of calibrator used is determined by the sound meter being calibrated. The specified model of the sound calibrator required can be found in a sound meter’s instruction manual. A sound calibrator should provide a reference sound pressure level and a traceable calibration certificate.
The Importance of Sound Meter Calibration
Uncalibrated equipment leads to inaccuracies that can result in productivity loss, incorrect process controls, improper readings, and other risks.
It is essential to calibrate a sound meter, particularly the microphone and measurement chain, as they are susceptible to drift. Regularly calibrating these components helps to maintain accuracy and can prolong its life.
How Sound Meter Calibration Works
Labs perform a calibration frequency check during sound meter calibration. To conduct this test, an operator connects the sound meter to a corresponding calibrated sound calibrator and checks whether the instrument is within tolerance limits.
An operator will adjust the sound meter if needed in order to meet the standard sound pressure levels. After calibration, a sound meter should show equal output levels.
