Applied Technical Services performs calibrations on capacitance meters, a type of tool used to measure capacitance in discrete capacitors and store electric charge. This equipment can measure capacitance by either charting the voltage’s rate of rise or by sending an alternating high-frequency current through the capacitor. While in use, the capacitance meter charges with a fixed current.
These devices have two outputs that can be easily connected to the two legs of the capacitor. The capacitance meter measures in units called farads (F). A one-farad capacitor holds a voltage that comes out to one volt when charged with one ampere per second.
Capacitance meters come in many forms:
- Bench/Free-Standing
- Clamp Meter
- Handheld
- Computer Board
Capacitance meters are being used more nowadays in applications requiring a fast energy source because of a corresponding increase in devices that use more energy in shorter amounts of time. While visually marked by the manufacturer with their capacitance rating, capacitors’ specifications become illegible over a long service life. For this reason, capacitance meters also see frequent use in identifying unknown capacitors, which proves crucial for proper circuit installation. Our trained professionals provide detailed, clear, and accurate reports at the electrical lab to ensure capacitors receive the correct rating.
The following manufacturers produce capacitance meters:
