A yellow and grey digital multimeter (DMM) rests on top of a module of lithium ion batteries. The multimeter's red and black cables are visible at the bottom of the image.

DMM Calibration

Periodic DMM calibration from Applied Technical Services helps to maintain measurement accuracy and quality. The ATS calibration lab has provided services since 1987. We know how irreplaceable benchtop and handheld digital multimeters are to electricians, HVAC technicians, and professionals in power generation and other industrial fields. Our calibration experts work fastidiously to provide clients with a quick turnaround rate of 7 to 10 business days.
Operation in rugged conditions or with high electrical loads can wear down multimeter components and require repairs or calibration. Most equipment manufacturers recommend yearly calibrations for regulatory compliance and as a good maintenance practice, though devices with more extreme operating requirements may need more frequent calibrations. Users should also submit DMMs for calibration after an accident or damage.
Why ATS?
ATS is A2LA-accredited in a broad range of calibration services for handheld and benchtop instruments. Our calibration lab accepts multimeters with up to 8 digits. Before calibrating any instrument, our experts closely inspect the device for signs of flaws or damage. If the device has damage, our technicians contact the client to discuss repairs before proceeding.

We calibrate for multiple critical functions:

To calibrate a multimeter, our experts compare the device’s readings at multiple test points with a precise calibration instrument from our lab. If the client’s device returns measurements outside the acceptable tolerances, our experts adjust the multimeter to restore NIST traceability. Unless requested otherwise, ATS technicians follow documented calibration procedures and tolerances recommended by the multimeter’s manufacturer.

Certificates of Calibration
Our calibration experts summarize their services in a certificate of calibration that includes the as-found and as-left data, the standard used during the calibration procedure, and the relation to NIST values. We keep all calibration reports on iPortal, our web-based interface that provides clients with secure 24/7 access to downloadable and printable copies of past certificates, device histories, and calibration statuses.
Calibration Lab Controls

The ATS calibration lab undergoes an annual assessment to ensure operations meet industry-wide conditions for ISO 17025 recertification. We are currently certified to perform A2LA-accredited calibrations with the following capabilities:

We keep our lab under stable conditions to limit the effects of environmental fluctuations. The temperatures remain within 2 degrees of 68 ˚ C and relative humidity 30-55% RH. Additionally, our floors have isolation joints to dampen vibrations as experts conduct operations.

Common DMM Manufacturers and Models
ATS has a long history of calibrating tools from manufacturers such as Fluke, Tektronix, Megger, Craftsman, and ExTech. Our experts have calibrated numerous DMM models and variations, including:
