ATS provides nondestructive GPR scanning services to map the locations of subsurface objects and structural details in concrete. During a Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) scan, the GPR equipment emits high-frequency radio pulses that reflect off subsurface objects.

The GPR system records these signals in radargrams or tomographic images. Our skilled GPR operators can interpret the data lines in these records and verify their discoveries with ferrous metal detecting devices.

Clients often request a GPR scan before a repair or expansion project that requires drilling, cutting, and coring concrete. GPR scanning also reports concrete dimensions and anomalies that may require maintenance.

GPR Detects Embedded Materials

Our GPR capabilities allow ATS to quickly and efficiently locate embedded materials that can impact structural integrity. Disturbing these components can lead to structural failure, system outage, and critical injuries.

We use GPR scanning services to find materials embedded in the concrete, namely:

  • Rebar
  • Post-tensioning cables
  • Conduits and piping

Rebar refers to subsurface rods, mesh, and wires that resist tensile forces on the concrete. Reinforced concrete maintains its strength against dynamic loads, vibrations, and weathering. In post-tensioned concretes, strong cables maintain the tensile strength of the concrete to reduce shrinkage and cracking. If construction operations sever critical post-tension tendons, the structural integrity of the entire concrete structure is in jeopardy.

Conduits protect electrical wires or convey fluids through pipes embedded in concrete. Maintenance and renovation crews must know the locations of pipes and conduits before operation. Otherwise, if a crew unknowingly strikes an electric conduit, they risk electrocution or an electric shock to personnel and a power outage to the entire structure.

GPR Reports Structural Details

GPR scanning services provide clients with key information about the concrete slab and the rest of the structure. Clients may use our services to:

  • Determine the depth of the concrete cover over rebar and tension cables
  • Measure the thickness of on-grade and suspended slabs
  • Uncover voids and other anomalies

Anomalies in concrete include known and unknown items beneath the surface, such as rebar and debris. Voids are holes beneath the concrete surface that require specialized equipment for detection. Voids can form due to any of the following conditions:

One example of a void is a sinkhole. Sinkholes form beneath a foundation when the soil under the structure settles, leaving a void between the concrete slab and the ground. This void can fill with water or wash away more earth beneath the foundation, destabilizing the entire building. Even small voids can cause injury or death.
