Applied Technical Services performs several porosity analysis methods for clients who need to ensure the quality of their production materials. Pores are voids that form at or below a material’s surface, making it uneven and structurally weaker. Excessive porosity can undermine a material’s tensile strength, elasticity, resistance to deformation under pressure, damping capacity, and other mechanical characteristics that made it a good choice as a constituent material in the first place. Voids can form during various parts of the production process — most often during the casting or pouring phases — when air bubbles form in the molten material before it cools and solidifies.
ATS’ testing divisions use several methods to determine porosity, each offering different benefits based on individual testing needs — so we encourage prospective clients to investigate which best suits their testing needs. We offer the following methods of porosity analysis:
ATS’ Porosity Analysis Capabilities
ATS’ varied testing divisions use a variety of methods to determine porosity, each offering different benefits based on individual testing needs — so we encourage prospective clients to investigate which best suits their testing needs. We offer the following methods of porosity analysis:
Metallurgy
- Image Analysis/Point Counts by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and optical microscopy on metallographic sections made from the components
Computed Tomography
- CT: taking thousands of microscopically accurate X-ray images from every angle allows our technicians to compile them into a 3D model and measure voids volumetrically
Nondestuctive Testing
- Radiographic Testing (RT): our experts can detect subsurface voids by taking X-rays of the sample
- Ultrasonic Testing (UT): administering ultrasonic frequencies and measuring the return time can reveal discontinuities, information that our experts can use to measure void length or width
- Penetrant Testing (PT): quick and efficient method for exposing surface discontinuities like voids
About Applied Technical Services
Since our founding in 1967, Applied Technical Services has continually expanded our capabilities to better meet the needs of our clientele. In the 50+ years since that day, we have grown immensely; no longer a trio of engineers struggling against the confines of their shared office in our founder’s basement, ATS now employs over 1,000 experts in the fields of testing, inspection, training, calibration, forensic investigation, and consulting engineering to serve clients operating in countries around the world. Our technicians perform all porosity analyses in compliance with our ISO 9001:2015-registered quality management system, ensuring that we provide our best every time we perform our services.
