The copper accelerated acetic acid salt spray (CASS) test is a widely used accelerated corrosion test utilized to verify protective properties of Nickel and Chrome plated parts.
The exposure duration is typically dependent on the type of corrosion resistance needed (whether it is for appearance or functional). However, since the test solution used is much more aggressive than the neutral salt spray, exposures are typically no longer than 48 hours. Due to the nature of the test solution used, CASS testing is performed in a specialized dedicated salt fog chamber. Even though it is a quick and cost effective way of evaluating the corrosive performance of various types of coatings, the following items are the most common ones. This type of test is widely employed in various industrial sectors on products designed for severe conditions:
- Decorative copper/nickel/chromium
- Nickel/chromium coating on steel, zinc alloys, aluminum alloys and plastics.
We perform evaluations following exposures and can conduct failure analysis of your products with the help of our fully equipped metallurgy laboratory and experienced staff of metallurgists to determine root cause. This test is regularly used in the automotive industry. It is very beneficial for determining service expectancy, plating process development, as well as routine manufacturing quality control.
The team at ATS is dedicated to completing all your corrosion testing needs in an expeditious manner at the highest quality level. This dedication to exceeding customer expectations is coupled with an adherence to ISO Quality standards such as ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 17025.
