Prolonged exposure to UV radiation can cause materials to weaken, crack, melt, and fade in color, so fade testing is important in the quality control of materials and products.

Ultraviolent Radiation and Color Fading

Photodegradation occurs when sunlight breaks down the chemical bonds in dyes, altering the colors of materials. Varying degrees of exposure have varying effects, but excessive exposure to sunlight can cause colors to fade as UV radiation damages a material’s molecular structure.
