The Applied Technical Services Family of Companies (FoC) provides weatherometer testing services that benefit a wide array of industries. Environmental conditions, such as moisture, temperature, sunlight, and humidity, can cause material degradation. It is essential that manufacturers use accelerated weathering tests to determine a material’s potential lifespan in specific climate conditions. Our environmental testing lab conducts comprehensive accelerated weathering tests, providing our clients with the information needed to improve their products’ resistance to environmental stress.
What is a Weatherometer?
A weatherometer, also spelled as Weather-Ometer, is a lab instrument that allows technicians to create controlled climates that simulate real-world weather patterns and events. These devices feature xenon lamps, light filtering systems, temperature control capabilities, water spray systems, and humidity controls that all combine to allow technicians to create the conditions needed to accurately mimic natural weather conditions. Weatherometers are versatile instruments adept at creating the conditions needed to conduct shortened test cycles that evaluate the long-term viability of coatings, fabrics, metals, and polymers.
Before technicians test sample materials, they select the quantity and size of the samples and prepare them for testing by cleaning and drying them. Technicians place the sample in a test chamber and initiate the testing process by exposing the sample to radiation and other environmental conditions that simulate the expected environment of the material. The length of weatherometer tests can vary greatly, but they’re often between a few hundred and 1,000 hours long.
