The Applied Technical Services Family of Companies (ATS FoC) performs bolt yield testing to determine the maximum stress a bolt can withstand before experiencing permanent deformation. Once a bolt yields, it may no longer provide the necessary clamping force needed to function properly.

Our experts apply ASTM, ASME, SAE, and ISO standards to measure mechanical properties and assess whether bolts return to their original length after loading or show permanent stretch.

How is Bolt Yield Strength Determined?

Bolt yield strength is determined through tensile testing by applying a steadily increased axial force to a bolt until it starts to permanently deform. The yield strength is calculated by dividing the load at the yield point by the bolt’s tensile stress area, indicating the maximum stress the bolt can withstand before permanent stretching occurs.
