ATS offers Vicat Testing in our metallurgy labs to determine at what temperature a specimen softens.
Vicat Testing at ATS
This test is used on materials that do not have a definite melting point, such as polymers and plastics. During this procedure, the specimen is immersed in a heat transfer oil bath and the temperature is raised at a specified rate until the time the specimen is penetrated by a flat-ended needle to the depth of 1 mm. The temperature discovered is referred to as the Vicat Softening Temperature. The Vicat Softening Temperature is an important piece of information to know when it comes to material selection specifically for product design and manufacturing for an elevated temperature application. Applied Technical Services will perform this test in compliance with ISO 306 and ASTM D1525.
