The Applied Technical Services Family of Companies (FoC) proudly offers DeFelsko PosiTector 6000 calibration to ensure accurate and reliable coat thickness measurements. A coat may involve singular or multiple layers. Dry film thickness (DFT) is a precise measurement of a cured (completely dry) coat on a substrate.

Coat thickness measurements provide quantitative data indicating:

  • Regulatory compliance
  • Aesthetic quality (e.g., gloss and color consistency)
  • Adhesion
  • Expected lifespan
  • Physical resistance to damage (e.g., impact and corrosion)

A thickness gauge can confirm a paint or varnish coat thickness is between minimum and maximum thickness requirements.

About the PosiTector 6000

DeFelskoโ€™s rugged electronic PosiTector 6000 measures the thickness of coats on ferrous and non-ferrous metal substrates. The PosiTector 6000 takes dry film thickness measurements with 25 interchangeable probes. Different probes measure non/magnetic and non/conductive coatings over non/magnetic and non/ferrous substrates. Many probe models for the PosiTector 6000 boast a measuring range of 0 to 60 mils (0 to 1,500 ฮผm).

The PosiTector 6000 calculates thickness through two nondestructive methods, eddy current or magnetic, depending on the material properties of the gauge probe, coating, and substrate:

  • Ferrous or non-ferrous
  • Conductive or non-conductive
  • Magnetic or non-magnetic

The magnetic method uses the electromagnetic induction principle to determine the thickness of non-magnetic materials. The Eddy Current method measures non-conductive coatings on non-ferrous metal substrates. To learn more about how DFT testing works, click here.

Coating Thickness Gauge Calibrations

ATS is ISO/IEC 17025:2017 accredited in calibrations and mechanical testing. Regular calibration helps keep the device in good working order and to ensure continued accuracy. DeFelsko recommends users set up a calibration program based on their work environments, starting with a yearly inspection. More extreme work environments will require more frequent calibrations. Our technicians compare readings at points across the deviceโ€™s range with a NIST-traceable primary or secondary standard to confirm the device is in tolerance with client or manufacturer specifications.

We are capable of coating thickness mechanical testing on metallic and non-metallic paints or coats according to method ASTM D7091. The ASTM D7091 standard establishes how to calibrate, verify, and adjust a coating thickness gauge to measure dry film thickness. This standard applies to magnetic and eddy current gages. ATS calibration experts perform this procedure in a controlled lab environment.

A2LA-Accredited Calibration Lab

We maintain an ISO/IEC 17025:2017-accredited calibration lab in our Marietta, GA, headquarters. Our experts can also travel to your site to calibrate equipment in person. Our equipment measures coats as thick as 665 mils (16,891 ฮผm). We can also calibrate coating thickness foils up to 1.5 inches (38.1 mm) thick.

ATS established its first calibration lab in 1987. Since then, we have optimized our procedures to reach a 7-10 turnaround average. Our experts deliver comprehensive calibration reports for calibrations with NIST-traceable standards.
