Paint Scratch Testing

Applied Technical Services conducts paint scratch testing to simulate the stresses that materials endure daily. Manufacturers use coating tests to evaluate the adhesive properties of the coating, ensuring that the product or equipment performs as intended in their desired applications.

ASTM Adhesion Standards
ASTM Class 5B

None of the squares of the lattice pattern are detached, and the edges around the cuts are smooth.

ASTM Class 4B

Small flakes of coating appear along the intersections of the lattice pattern, but less than 5 percent is affected.

ASTM Class 3B

Coating flakes along the lattice pattern intersect, affecting between 5 percent to 15 percent of the pattern.

ASTM Class 2B

Coating flakes resembling ribbons along the edges and intersections of the cut, affecting between 15 to 35 percent of the pattern.

ASTM Class 1B

The coating flakes are now large ribbons, and partially or wholly detached squares form the lattice pattern. Between 35 to 65 percent of the area is affected.

ASTM Class 0B
