What are Halogens and Halides?

Applied Technical Services performs testing for halogens and halides. Halogen is the name of a family of periodic elements: namely fluorine, chlorine, bromine, iodine, and astatine. These are highly reactive elements that, when paired with a variety of metals, create salts called halides. This class of compounds includes potassium iodide, silver bromide, and sodium chloride — better known as table salt. Manufacturers use halogens and halides in products ranging from powerful disinfectants like bleaches to lighting like incandescent lamps.

These chemicals can be corrosive in small quantities and are harmful in large quantities; for this reason, their use is limited by regulatory bodies and industry standardization entities.
