Abstract of PFAS compliance and dangers. A male model points at the viewer. Hexagons and text describing PFAS hover around the model. The text includes: Dangerous, PFAS, Perfluoroalkyl and Polyfluoroalkyl substances, Forever Chemicals, and Toxic and Carcinogenic.

PFAS Compliance

Applied Technical Services provides chemical testing to help clients ensure PFAS compliance as polyfluoroalkyl and perfluoroalkyl chemicals receive increased regulatory attention. We guide clients through the relevant PFAS regulations and legislations by providing laboratory tests for quality control and chemical analysis.
We operate a CPSC-approved lab for consumer products under state, federal, and international regulations. Our staff includes highly qualified experts with decades of combined experience and training. We have tested a wide range of consumer products for potentially hazardous PFAS chemicals, including:
About PFAS
PFAS have come under heightened scrutiny as new research uncovers the potential consequences on consumer health and the environment. Dubbed “forever chemicals,” PFAS do not degrade easily and can accumulate in the body or environment for years. PFAS pollution can contaminate soil and water, impacting the crops and livestock intended for human consumption.

Two other methods of exposure are inhaling PFAS chemicals and touching products manufactured or treated with PFAS. Several household products are frequently manufactured with PFAS today: non-stick cookware, waterproof or stainproof apparel, food containers, carpets, upholstery, and furniture treatments.

Exposure is associated with the following in animal tests:

PFAS Testing and Analysis

ATS’ state-of-the-art lab is A2LA-accredited in numerous tests for harmful chemicals. Using liquid chromatography (LC), we can compare the PFAS content and concentrations with permissible limits under state, federal, industry, and international regulations.

Ion chromatography (IC) separates a compound by ion type and size to allow for measurements of PFAS concentrations. If IC analysis returns high concentrations of restricted substances, our experts may recommend testing methods such as liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC/MS/MS), which separates and quantifies ions with high sensitivity. Our experts use LC/MS/MS to study trace elements in samples and quantify PFAS in products.
Compliance with PFAS Regulations

ATS helps clients adhere to the legislations and recommendations from federal, state, and international bodies.

Federal Recommendations

The EPA has introduced several rules and guidelines for reporting manufactured and imported products containing certain PFAS. Laboratory analysis can help clients align their products with EPA recommendations and goals.

State Regulations

If your company plans to manufacture or import PFAS products into a state with restrictions, you need a qualified lab to check for compliance. Several states have passed legislation to gradually eliminate PFAS in drinking water, food packaging, and consumer products.
Other states have established or proposed maximum contaminant levels (MCLs) to limit pollution and exposure. Many MCL proposals apply to firefighting foams, firefighting personal protective equipment, food packaging, cookware, cosmetics, children’s products, apparel, and pesticides.

Multiple states have also taken legal action against parties responsible for PFAS air, water, and soil pollution.

International Legislation

ATS also tests products for PFAS under the EU’s REACH regulation, which certain PFAS on lists of restricted substances, substances of very high concern (SVHC), and persistent organic pollutants (POPs).

Standards and EPA Methods

Our laboratory experts frequently perform analyses and tests according to industrial standards. We can test for PFAS according to the following:
