Xenon Weathering Testing

The ATS FoC offers xenon weathering testing services that evaluate how products and materials respond to environmental stress.

The Applied Technical Services Family of Companies (ATS FoC) offers xenon weathering testing services that evaluate how products and materials respond to long-term exposure to sunlight, precipitation, and humidity. Weather elements can cause material degradation, negatively impacting the performance, appearance, and longevity of materials. Our xenon weather tests help our clients determine how their products will respond to repeated exposure to various weather conditions.

What is a Xenon Weathering Test?

A xenon weathering test is a type of test that replicates natural weather events, accelerating their effects, allowing experts to observe years’ worth of sunlight, humidity, and heat in a matter of weeks. Xenon weathering tests utilize instruments called Weather-Ometers to create controlled conditions that accurately simulate specific weather cycles and conditions. Weather-Ometers consist of xenon arc lamps, water sprayers, and humidifiers to simulate sunlight, heat, moisture, and humidity, all of which contribute to material degradation.

During a weathering test, technicians place a sample material inside the testing chamber and set the instrument to specific settings that simulate conditions identical to the sample material’s intended environment. Technicians document changes in the sample’s appearance and physical properties, providing manufacturers with the information they need to select materials best suited for specific applications.

More About Our Weathering Testing Services

The ATS Family of Companies has A2LA-accredited environmental testing labs capable of evaluating how environmental stress impacts products and materials. Whether we’re testing how UV radiation impacts coatings or assessing how aircraft materials withstand the harsh effects of extreme heat, our lab specialists consistently strive to deliver solution-focused services in a timely manner. Our xenon weathering tests can be customized to the unique needs of our customers, or conducted in compliance with popular standards, such as:

The Importance of Weathering Testing

Xenon weather tests help manufacturers do the following:

  • Identify weathering-related flaws in a product’s design
  • Strengthen a product’s ability to withstand environmental stress
  • Compare different coatings and materials
  • Ensure compliance testing standards and regulations
