VOC Testing Methods
Applied Technical Services (ATS) offers a variety of VOC Testing Methods for clients looking to determine the composition of VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) in a given test material. VOCs are chemical compounds that include gases emitted from either solids or liquids at normal room temperature or slightly elevated temperatures. Various products from household items to the car you drive can be emitters of VOCs, with certain compounds being dangerous to human health and/or the environment when released above the government established limits.
One of several VOC Testing Methods ATS performs is EPA Method 24, which was established in 1984 as a means of regulating these harmful compounds in surface coatings. A Method 24 analysis yields general VOC composition values (such as density and water content) in the first section, while the specific compounds present in the sample material are identified during the second half of the test. Testing in accordance with EPA Method 24 is recommended for liquid samples such as inks, paints, or coatings.
This general technique involves using Headspace GC/MS (Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry) analyzers to discover VOCs in samples of liquids or solid materials. In GC/MS Headspace Testing, a sample test product is heated at a specific temperature for a predetermined time length before the VOC content is determined.
Both GMW 15634 and VDA 278 standard testing use dynamic thermal desorption to determine the VOC content in various non-metallic materials. When performing either of these tests, a thermal desorption (TD) unit heats a sample until it off-gases and emits VOCs into a GC/MS analyzer. GMW 15634 is particularly helpful in testing vehicle interior components, as both the EPA and the automotive industry have developed standards for the maximum content of VOCs in such materials. The VDA 278 method is frequently utilized in emissions testing, although the same standard has also been adopted by other industries for evaluating a variety of non-metallic materials.
