Backflow Test Gauge Calibration

Applied Technical Services performs backflow test gauge calibration— measurement tools also called backflow test kits. Backflow tests are used to determine if all backflow prevention devices, which keep the wastewater in commercial buildings from infiltrating the clean drinking water supply, continue to operate effectively. We perform these backflow test gauge calibrations to ensure that the testing device returns accurate data.

The backflow test gauge is the instrument used to perform the backflow test. Most of these kits consist of a differential pressure gauge, needle valves, hoses, fittings, and some manner of case. Depending on the brand, type, and model of the kit, they can all vary.

EPA regulation mandates that these test gauges undergo certification each year. If it fails certification, the backflow test gauge calibration must take place and it must be inspected so that it can be returned to its proper working condition. The certification process entails simulating a backflow test, during which inspectors check over each component of the instrument.

How does the backflow test gauge work?

A certified plumber must first shut down the water flow and wait a few minutes, looking for places where the pressure accumulates and where it should not. If the system loses pressure, then that shows how the wastewater is contaminating the clean water. Backflow can happen at any time, which is why numerous states require annual testing. The actual backflow test typically takes 20 to 30 minutes, although it may take longer if the plumber finds necessary repairs.
